In theory a smoky eye is brilliant. It’s eye catching and yet, with the perfect blend of colors it flatters all eye colors. And yet, it’s not the easiest look to pull off. However, at the premiere of her latest film “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” Keira Knightley experimented with an intense navy smoky eye and still managed to stick to her signature romantic aesthetic. Her secret to keeping the dramatic look in check isn’t in the makeup (although leaving the rest of the face light did help). It’s actually all about the hair. Just look at Keira’s soft updo.

The twisted chignon has this princess feel to it, leveling out the edginess of the eye makeup. With loose curls left in front, the facial features are softened. For a similar updo, separate the hair into two sections with a center part. Twist each side along the hairline, pinning as you go. Take both twisted sections and wrap them together in a loose chignon at the nape of the neck.
